U3A Maryborough - Class Descriptions

 Steve's Introduction to Philosophysing

Marcia's Exercise/Dance Fitness

Our exercise class consists of gentle warm-ups, stretching, muscle toning and co-ordination.  (No floor exercises).  The class is a low-impact programme and members are encouraged to only do what they can manage, and sit out or improvise if they are unable to do whole programme. Our dance fitness helps with co-ordination and balance.  We have active members aged from 55 to 86, who thoroughly enjoy our class and nobody leaves without a smile on their face.

Musical Keyboard Kapers

What a great name for a small group of enthusiastic electronic keyboard players!  They have been meeting for several years now, bringing their keyboards along and each playing several songs - mostly the old favourites, the ones we all know the words to that set our feet tapping.

The class is very laid back, casual and friendly and their playing is so good - very proficient.  Maybe you would like to join them.  They welcome new members to the group and are ready, willing and able to help you with your technique.

Line Dancing

"What is a jazz box, vine and monterey?"I hear you ask.  Well, come along to our fun U3A Line Dancing class and our lovely tutor Lorraine will show you!  With easy dances for learners, through to more advanced levels, you will enjoy great music, fun dancing and good company.

Sing-a-long

This class has been together for many years.  We sing many types of songs, old and new from 1900 to 2006 (approx). All get along well and enjoy our morning together.  New members welcome.

Mah Jong

Do you want to learn about Dragons, Winds, Pungs and Kengs?  Join our friendly group.  We offer full training in the game in a pleasant atmosphere.

Writer's Group

Social fun group using our imagination.  We are a friendly, stimulating and provocative group and everyone is welcome to come along and join in.

Hand and Foot

Hand and Foot is one of the many versions of canasta, a popular card game.  There are several versions of hand and foot too.  This is the way the game is played in Maryborough.  The game can be played by three players using six packs of cards or four players using five packs or six players with seven packs.  Playing boards are used to hold the cards.  In the three-handed game, each player plays their own game whilst the four-handed has two teams, the six-handed also has teams of three players.

Tai Chi for Arthritis and Diabetes

Tai Chi is a gentle form of exercise that has existed in multiple forms for thousands of years, known to aid a variety of conditions and improve your overall lifestyle.  Rebecca is a qualified teacher of this art form who is always happy to help her students, beginners and advanced.  Rebecca is now holding two classes, one for beginners who can have additional assistance and an advanced class for those who know the basics.

Yoga

Yoga is the science of right living and as such is intended to be incorporated into our daily life.  The purpose of yoga is to unify the physical body with the mind and with the vital energy flowing within it, so that we can experience a sense of harmony and balance.  We are never too young or too old to practice yoga.  It encourages a strong body, a sharp mind, and it reduces stress.  Come along and give it a try as we have members of all ages and abilities and Joan is willing to assist you to get the most out of the session.

Qi Gong Exercise, Tai Chi

Qi (variations:- Chi Ji) means energy and Qi Gong(variation: Chi Kung) is the flow of energy, being the Chinese practice of aligning breath, movement and awareness of exercise.  In some cases it is used as a preventive medicine and self-healing.
Once the exercise become familiar, and learning to breathe with each movement, it can have a calming and relaxing effect.  There are several different sets and styles, some easy and some a little more difficult.  Exercises are repetitive and easily followed.
By the gentle use of the knees, wrists and the turning of the shoulders, the limbs become supple and the muscles lose their stiffness.  Breathing becomes natural with each movement as one becomes more confident.  The motto of practicing Qi Gong is ÿou move to what your body tells you".
Qi Gong U3A Maryborough welcomes anyone who would like to come along and try.  Age is no object, our average class age is 70 years young, sometimes we miss a move but that is all in fun and learning in a morning's lesson.

Jive/Partner Dancing

"Fun with Dancing".  Shared fun on the dance floor learning and revising easy partner dances to great music!  Some slow swing jive for those who want to try something different.  Just bring your smile and let your feet do the dancing.

Ballet For Seniors

When I was little I wanted to grow up to be a Ballerina! Ohhh, opps, that must be about now right? So let's grab our leotards and tights, ankle warmers, ballet shoes and tutus..... oh no stop. No we don't want those. Let's back up and start again.  Debra will be your torturer/teacher! Now with your help we all get a new chance. This time NO tights, leotards etc.
What you will need to start off with is bare feet (if you have jazz shoes bring them but don't go out and buy them until you know whether you like the class), a t-shirt and shorts (2 way stretch if you have them).
